FEBRUARY DEVOTIONAL

February Devotion

During February on the second Sunday, we celebrate Founder’s Day – the birth and foundation of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. We also celebrate Black History Month by remembering our African American heritage, past and present struggles, sacrifices, rich contributions, and achievements for our country – the United States of America.

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” John 15:13 (NKJV)

Jimmie Lee Jackson (1938 - 1965) was a civil rights activist who was shot and killed by Alabama State Trooper James Bonard Fowler in February 1965. Jackson was unarmed and attempting to protect his mother from police brutality. His death was part of the inspiration for the protest marches from Selma to Montgomery, an important event in the American Civil Rights movement.

To give your life so another person can live is the ultimate proof of love. During the night that Jesus was betrayed, He told His disciples of His intention to give His life in exchange for humankind: He told them, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends” (John 15:13). He then set the ultimate example of self-sacrifice by going to the cross.

Jimmie Lee Jackson gave the ultimate sacrifice to save his mother. Jesus gave the ultimate sacrifice when He died on the cross for our sins to save us that we might have an eternal home in Heaven. Just think – Jesus did that for us! In doing so, he not only proved his love for us, he also provided a means for us to be forgiven and have eternal life.

Rise Up…Speak Up…Impact:

For Such a Time as This!

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; endure justice for those being crushed. Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.  Proverbs 31:8-9 (NLT)
